14 years ago I was laid off from my job.
I was an engineer and I will never forget that meeting where they told us that our whole department was being eliminated. It was a total surprised and I felt like I had been punched in the gut.
It was definitely scary but I knew I didn’t want to go back to work because I had a 1 year old son at home at the time and we hated dropping him off at daycare.
I tried a lot of different things (including an in-home wine tasting job – that was a nice side gig with a toddler at home LOL).
I started learning social media and Facebook marketing as a way to advertise my business and my business grew. Friends started to notice and said, can you teach me how to do that?
I found out that I loved helping businesses learn social media and Facebook marketing.
I noticed that a lot of the blogs and tutorials were a little boring out there so I used one of my Improv comedy characters, Grandma Mary Social Media Edutainer to do the blogging. (Yes, I also did improv on the side for 8 years – with toddlers at home you’ll do anything to get out of the house).
And then what started out as a “side gig” has now turned into a book deal and full time career.
I didn’t have a background in Marketing. I didn’t have any special powers. My blog was super basic when I started. But I kept at it.
And that’s what I love about the world we are in right now.
We can choose how we want our life to look like. We can start a business from nothing and in a few short years be traveling all over the world speaking and helping amazing clients grow their business.
As my kids grew, I’ve grown my business. And now I take them with me on my trips (sometimes – other times they are super whiny about leaving home).
Wherever you are at right now, don’t give up. Overnight success does not happen overnight.
I am passionate about helping other businesses grow. I love to see their success.
But more than that, I’m passionate about helping people have the freedom to design their life the way they want.
To be immune from layoffs or jobs that they hate.
To be able to give people the ability to be home with their kids, or care for someone in their lives who needs care, or to travel when and where they want.
