People have been asking me “Grandma, what software do you use to make your wonderful and entertaining and shockingly useful tutorials?” Okay, I may have embellished that a little. But I have your answer – it’s the fabulous and free CamStudio.
I like CamStudio because you can put the webcam video into the screen capture so people can see my lovely face. People like to get to know you. Then all I do is use the free Windows Movie Maker to edit the screen capture – trim off the ends, add a title. It’s not hard and it’s free.
Now there are other screen capture products out there that are very nice – Camtasia is fantastic. But it’s also $300. It has some snazzy editing features and has a nice zoom feature so you can see the details on the screen. But I did have some problems with the webcam insertion on their most recent release of Camtasia. The nice thing is that they do have a 30-day free trial so you can test it out.
So if you want to record your screen, try CamStudio – it’s handy and free!
but how do you put the video b it of you in there?? I’m confused??
As soon as you click on Tools and Video Annotations, it will add the web cam shot of you. Then you can move that little square around the screen if you need to. Thanks for the question Phyllis 🙂
Great tutorial, as always. Cam Studio works great and is free. Nothing quite like free. This will help a lot of people who are just starting out in video, which is beyond huge right now.
This is awesome, Grandma! I used up my Camtasia free trial and thought CamStudio wouldn’t do the job, but with these tricks I’m all set to start doing tutorials now. Thanks!
Thanks so much LaVonne! And I’m sure you are making some fabulous tutorials! Can’t wait to see them.
