I’m finally getting around to watching the recordings from Social Media Marketing World 2014 and these notes came from the presentation by Kim Garst.

Kim Garst

Kim started her session by sharing a bit about how Twitter really drives her business.  She now has over 260,000 followers and is mentioned or retweeted every 45 seconds!  She has built this up following in just 5 1/2 years.  Incredible!  See more about what she does here:  www.twitter.com/KimGarst

But it’s not just about the numbers, it’s about opportunity.  She’s appeared on TV a number of times and connected with some wonderful people.

Twitter myths debunked

Myth #1:  Tweet and you’ll be famous!

NO, it’s work!  You have to have a plan and you have to work at it.

Twitter opportunity

Myth #2:  You can’t sell stuff on Twitter

Yes, you can but using different methods.  Things have changed in the way we market.  Now it’s about personal interactions.  You have to connect with your audience before you sell.

Myth #3:  I don’t think Twitter is right for MY business.

All types of businesses have used Twitter successfully.  The strategies work for all different businesses.

Myth #4:  You MUST keep personal separate from business.

Not true.  People will connect with you on a personal level before they connect with you on a business level.  Personal and business all blends together on social.  Be human with your audience.

Her formula is Value + Human Interaction = a Great Community.  You need to BE social, not just DO social.

How to Build a Twitter Strategy and Content Plan

Start by asking these questions:

1.  What do you want from Twitter?

  • Brand awareness
  • Leads/sales
  • Professional networking

2.  Who is your ideal customer?

3.  How can you serve them?

4.  What do they care about, besides your product or service?

Remember, people don’t search for our solutions, they search by their problems

She is also a fan of automating a portion of your tweets from this content plan.  You can’t be on Twitter all the time.

4 Secrets to Dominate Twitter

1. Connect with Influencers

Use Hootsuite to organize what you want to see into columns.  Kim also filters her mentions by Klout score to make sure she engages with those people.  She mentions that these people are probably more engaged on Twitter.

Twitter connect with influencers

She says that you shouldn’t only interact with people with high Klout scores – just make sure you are responding to those people as well as some of the other people who are tweeting with you.

2. Find Real-time Leads

Use the advanced search with special targeted keywords to help you find people who are looking for you on Twitter.  https://twitter.com/search-advanced

Keep your search up with a tool like Hootsuite so you can reference this column throughout the day.

3. TARGET followers

Use ManageFlitter to find targeted followers by searching through bios.

Manage Flitter

Use the Power Mode to put key phrases in and your search results will come back with people who:

  • Are active on Twitter
  • Follow people who follow them
  • Aren’t spammers

Follow new people regularly to grow your own following.

4. Automate Evergreen Content

Evergreen content is everything that STILL has RELEVENCE

Use Socialoomph to help you recycle content and build up your queues so that you don’t have to constantly worry about what you are going to tweet.
